"Low Carb Gift Giving and Getting….What to GIVE a Low Carber"
From Co-Editor Wendy L
All I Want For Christmas Is A Low Carb Treat ….
The weather has turned chilly, the smell of snow and wood smoke hangs in the air, holiday lighting ceremonies will be taking place soon and Christmas tree displays have been in the department stores for weeks. You've made a list and are checking it twice, but you're stumped - you don't have any idea what gift to give the low-carb dieter in your life. Don't worry, the perfect gift is out there and will be very easy to find.
Visit your local Borders or Barnes & Noble bookstore and browse the magazine rack. I did this a week ago and found no less than six magazines devoted to low carb living or the low carb lifestyle. Buy a few magazines for a gift or buy one and send off a subscription in the name of your gift recipient. Present the magazine with a note explaining the subscription (check out the link to "Low Carb Energy" in this issue). Prevention Magazine has a "book" type magazine devoted to low carb, and I found it on the magazine rack at Wal-mart, along with a few of the same low carb magazines I saw at Borders (Wal-mart discounts magazines, too).
Cookbooks are also a good choice and there are many out there devoted to low carb recipes. Browse the stacks at the bookstore and you'll find shelves of them, and if you are a member of Costco or Sam's Club they sell a few at discounted prices. Take a look at Diana Lee's cookbooks here: http://pages.prodigy.net/dls1015/
Every cook is interested in food prep that is fast & easy, and Belinda Schweinhart has written two cookbooks filled with wonderful fast & easy recipes. You'll find Belinda's link in this newsletter, or you can see her cookbooks here: http://lowcarbcookbooks.com
Save time and pick up ideas from Belinda's cookbook compilation here: http://lowcarbcookbooks.com
It's always a good idea, from time to time, to brush up and reread the writings of low carb professionals, and any serious low carber would love a hard back copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution or any of his other health related books. Barnes & Noble publishes a hard back trilogy that includes Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, Dr. Atkins New Diet Cookbook and Dr. Atkins New Carbohydrate Gram Counter. Price was less than ten dollars.
Other professional writings include Sugar Busters; The Protein Power Lifeplan by Eades; The South Beach Diet by Agaston; The Secret to Low Carb Success by Laura Richard; The Low Carb Bible; The Schwarzbein Principle by Schwarzbein; The Zone by Sears; Suzanne Somers books on Somersizing or Karen Rysavy's Learn the Low Carb Lifestyle for Five Bucks.
If you know someone that is fairly new to the low carb lifestyle, give a pocket carbohydrate gram counter. It will help them learn the carb counts of different foods. Any type of carb diary or food journal would also be appreciated. Not long ago I found a three pack of Atkins products for $12.99, and the package included Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, Atkins Carbohydrate Gram Counter and a spiral bound food journal.
If your gift recipient is a tea drinker, Celestial Seasonings produces holiday teas that are packaged in boxes with beautiful artwork celebrating the Christmas season. Nutcracker Sweet has long been a favorite of mine, and this year the company has issued a new tea, Candy Cane Lane, that is exceptional. It tastes exactly like a candy cane and is fast becoming my new favorite. Gingerbread Spice and Sugar Plum Spice are irresistible, as are Santa's Candy Apple and Rudolph's Rockin' Raspberry. I've been able to find the teas at my local health food market, but you can also order them online here:
Look for the biggest cup and saucer set you can find, stick a box of tea in the cup and wrap with a red ribbon. Take my word for it - Celestial Seasonings teas are so good, give more than one box.
No diet is going to be successful without the addition of exercise. Exercise makes you feel good in addition to making you look good. Pilates and Yoga are excellent low impact exercises anyone can do, and a book and tape set would be a great way to get someone started on a regular exercise program.
I've found Rodney Yee's Yoga tapes very easy to follow, and Mari Winsor's Pilates tapes are second to none. Winsor Pilates also has alternate workouts if you have a delicate back, neck, etc. There are many versions of Yoga/Pilates kits available that include a tape, book and mat, and some come with aids such as an exercise ball or stepping block. Walking is the best exercise you can do, and a set of hand weights, a portable radio/cd player with headphones and an upbeat musical cd would make a lovely gift.
What about a health club membership? Many health clubs, in lieu of full memberships, also offer individual classes in Yoga, Pilates, bicycling, kick-boxing, weight training, etc., and gift certificates are usually available for those classes. Water bottles, exercise clothes, equipment bags, pedometers - the list of add on gifts is endless.
Buy a pie plate or spring form pan and fill it with ingredients for low carb cheesecake. A pretty basket or bowl could be filled with an assortment of low carb candy. Line a kitchen mixing bowl or small skillet with a sassy napkin, fill it with containers of food seasonings, adding a few elephant garlic cloves and a spatula or food turner. Give a bread machine and a couple of low carb bread mixes. Gourmet or organic olive oil would be a lovely gift for the serious cook, as would an assortment of gourmet cheese or nuts.
Hickory Farms makes one of the best summer sausage sticks I've ever eaten, and there are very good sugar free mustards available now - add a stick of cheese or small cutting board and knife.
Salads are a low-carb diet mainstay, and what better gift than a salad green spinner or storage container? Add a bottle or two of Newman's Own salad dressing to the salad spinner and don't forget the bottle of gourmet olives!
If you are on a limited budget, buy printer paper with a pretty border or holiday theme and search the web for various low carb recipes, print them out on the paper and place them in a 3-ring binder or folder. You can customize this for the recipient, and don't forget to add a personal forward! Hint: check out our very own Low Carb Resource recipe archives here: http://www.lowcarbresource.com/recipes.html
There are many, many different gifts that you can give this year with a low carb theme, and I hope I've given you a few ideas. Happy Holidays!

"Low Carb Gift Giving and Getting…What to ASK FOR as a Low Carber"
From Co-Editor Julie W
Dear Santa, I'm a low carber….
I have to say that in the four plus years I've been a low carber my Santa list has really taken a huge swing in direction. Sure, I still have that $7000 diamond tennis bracelet from Zales and a new silver Ferrari on the list, but Santa never seems to deliver for some reason. So, I always add more practical, fun, time saving, low carb friendly gotta haves.
KITCHEN GADGETS! Who doesn't love em?
At the top of the list has got to be a small coffee grinder, better yet, two! These are inexpensive and used by thousands of low carbers to grind our own nut flours. Picking up your nuts at bulk retailers or online in bulk from places like http://www.nuttyguys.com/ will save you tons of money in the long run.
Why two coffee grinders? You can't use a coffee grinder for coffee and then use it for grinding nuts. If you're a coffee lover there are wonderful decaf beans in mouth-watering flavors you should try! There is nothing comparable to fresh ground coffee from beans and if you're buying it ground now, you'll never go back once you try it.
A deep fat fryer! Rival has an awesome "cool touch" one that is perfect for chicken wings, or breaded (in almond flour made with your coffee grinder) gizzards!
An ice cream maker! Cuisinart has one that requires no salt or ice and in just 20 minutes you've got homemade low carb ice cream!
A bread machine! With the awesome low carb bread recipes out there, this is a MUST!
A high quality mandoline for slicing those hard to cut by hand jicama, celery root, or turnips to make fries or hash browns. You will want the BEST you can find for this job.
A salad spinner is a godsend and something we use every day.
Don't forget the George Foreman grill!
How about a water filtration system? There is nothing like GOOD water. If you're buying it bottled this is a must have.
The ISI whipped cream dispenser and cartridges are sworn by many low carbers to be something they would never want to live without. http://www.easywhip.com/
A food dehydrator for homemade jerky! The Ronco brand is a yogurt maker too!
A rotisserie, an ice shaver for snow cones (add sugar free DaVinci syrup…YUM), vacuum food saver, stick blender, food processor, crock pot. How about a turkey fryer or a smoker?
Well as you can see, a low carber can fill up Santa's sleigh pretty quickly. These are just a few of the most used and talked about low carber gotta haves. I hope this gives you some ideas on what to "hint" for this Christmas!
So there you have it, the topic for November 2004, in our humble opinions.

LOW CARB PRODUCT REVIEW OF THE MONTH: NOVEMBER, 2004
LOW CARB ICE CREAM, DRINKS, DESSERTS by Diana Lee at http://pages.prodigy.net/dls1015/
Completing my collection of favorite low carb cookbooks from Diana Lee is Low Carb Ice Cream, Drinks and Desserts.
Forty nine pages chock full of mouth watering recipes in categories like Ice Cream, Sherbet & Yogurt Ice Cream, Frozen Desserts, Sodas, Shakes, Alcoholic Drinks and a section on "This and That" which includes sauces and toppings.
One of my favorite things about Diana's cookbooks is her first chapters called "Before you Begin" where she lists and explains her ingredients and tools separately explaining what makes them important in the outcome of the recipes. She tells you where to get them at the best prices and always includes her personal mailing and email address if you need help or have questions.
Diana explains storing also, as we all know that sugar free ice cream stores harder. Diana has tackled this problem and shares tips for her readers to get the best out of their homemade wonders.
Who wouldn't wait in line for creations like Diana's Apple Pie, Southern Pecan, Banana Colada, Chocolate Mint, Grasshopper, Peanut Butter Dough, or White Chocolate and Raspberry Ice Cream? How about Orange Sherbet, Fried Ice Cream, Banana Daiquiri, Mint Julep, or a Pina Colada?
As with Diana's cookbooks, recipes are not all you get. Diana includes Cooking tips, tips on Herbs and Spices, measurement charts, cooking terms, microwave hints as well as fancy napkin folding directions!
Diana's recipes are simple to follow and easy to make. Recipes are listed with total carbohydrate and protein counts. This cookbook will be not only a favorite of YOURS but of your families also!
In my opinion, this is a MUST HAVE to your low carb cookbook collection!

READER SUBMITTED Q & A'S
Q: I make a solo breakfast for myself during the week. I have low-carb recipes that make many servings but few quick & easy breakfasts for one. I'm tired of eggs, mock danish and hot cereal. Would your readers have any breakfast recipes that make only one serving or recipes that can be adapted?
A: Shelley, have you thought about eating "non-conventional" breakfast items? If you have dinner left-overs, try them for breakfast. A piece of baked chicken, a pork chop, slice or two of meatloaf, summer sausage and Colby cheese; arrange 3-4 slices of cooked bacon on a plate, cover with a slice of cheese and microwave a few seconds until the cheese melts. Reheat vegetables with cheese sauce or vegetables with butter. Try placing a thin slice of turkey in muffin cups and fill with a beaten egg mixture containing cheese and mushrooms or chopped peppers, bake and reheat and eat in the morning.
Readers, please send in your favorite breakfast ideas and we'll use those for the "Recipes for the month of December"! Let's hear from you! Send to email@example.com
